The Way It Is
Arrangement preview
Bruce Hornsby's The Way It Is, arranged for marching band by Brighton Barrineau and Trevor Schachner, 1:33 at grade 1 to 2, written as the ballad of Clinton High School's 2019 show for a small band. The piano riff that everyone knows moves into the front ensemble and then into the winds, and the verse melody is passed around the band so no section carries the ballad alone. It is short for a ballad, which suits a young band in a seven-minute show, and it gives the drum line a rest before the closer. The Way It Is sits between Video Killed the Radio Star and Yo Home to Bel-Air in the original book, a 1980s show for a small program. Audio of the full arrangement is on this page. Available on its own or in a build-your-own show; licensing goes through Tresona and is paid by the school.

Every arrangement here is available on its own. Combine it with arrangements from other shows, or add it to a show where we write a few new pieces for your band. Pricing depends on what you need, so we'll work it out together.
